The Inaugural Nantucket Race Week Women's Fun Sail event met with broadly enthusiastic support with 15 boats including Rhodes 19s, a Nantucket Indian and a colorful Fisher Cat (one of only two in the harbor!!). Over 55 women from Nantucket Community Sailing, the Great Harbor Yacht Club and the Nantucket Yacht Club participated in the event which was designed to allow a broad spectrum of sailing skill levels to enjoy an "obstacle course" around the inner harbor. Each boat had to pick a team name, exchange skippers three times on an atypical "triangle" course-a windward leg, a reach leg, where crew members had to retrieve rubber ducks from floating scallop buckets and then tether them together with two different common knot types, a downwind leg, gybing among buoys, and then a finishing windward leg where the final skipper donned a blindfold and took instructions from their crew. Additional activities were a series of right of way questions and a boat identification quiz.
To keep things light (and set the bar high for future years!!), participants were asked to dress as their favorite rendition of Wonderwoman, with some excellent results!! Co-event organizers, Sue Marinelli, Lois Sager and Posie Constable created amusing prizes for all, including for most creative boat names including Rhodes Scholars, Sassy Queens, Sea Chicks, Motley Crew and Flying Nuns.
